When we got to the check-in counter, we discovered that the flight we’d reserved changed planes in Nassau. That wouldn’t do. Our captive would have another chance to get away. The customer service representative went over all our options with us. There was simply no direct flight into Georgetown available. We had no choice but to purchase three tickets. We were going to Nassau with her. I hated the idea, but couldn’t figure out a better solution.

While we waited for the flight, we went to the Enterprise booth to extend the rental on the car. Then I remembered that Leap of Faith was anchored unattended in the river at Fort Myers. Events were not unfolding as smoothly as I hoped. I was pretty good at adapting to changing circumstances. Holly was not. She was irritated and stressed. Airports are busy places with too many people and too much noise. The girl we were transporting could have caused us trouble at any moment. We were hungry and tired.

“This sucks, Breeze,” said Holly.

“I agree,” I said. “But it will all be over soon. We make a quick turnaround in Nassau and go back home.”

“I don’t have a home,” she said. “My boat is still on the hard. I don’t know where home is even when it’s in the water.”

“I guess Pelican Bay is as close to home as I’ve ever gotten,” I said. “But the Berry Islands sure were nice.”

“What is it with you and Pelican Bay?” she asked. “It’s nice and all, but there are so many other nice places.”

“It’s where I go to mend my soul,” I said. “It’s saved me several times. I feel at peace there. When things go to hell, I go back there and heal.”

“I thought I needed a place like that,” she said. “But now, I think I just want to stay on the move. I can’t wait to get my boat back.”

“Soon enough,” I said.
